双氢睾酮亦称17β-羟基-5α-雄[甾]烷-3-酮、5α-二氢睾酮、5α-DHT、或雄烷酮(stanorone)。是睾酮的双键在5α处被还原的甾醇。对附属腺(前列腺、精囊腺等),起着所谓的真的雄性激素的作用。在附属性腺的细胞中存在着形成该甾醇的5α-氢化酶。该甾醇和受体蛋白质在细胞内结合成的复合体进入附属腺的细胞核中,促进新的蛋白质合成。显示出比睾酮稍强的雄性激素作用。5β-体虽在肝脏、鸡冠等中以睾酮形态存在,但是没有雄性激素的作用。5α-二氢睾酮由于3α-羟基甾醇脱氢酶的作用而代谢成为5α-雄烷-3α-17β-二醇排出体外。

Dihydrotestosterone is a biologically active metabolite of the hormone testosterone, formed primarily in the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5a-reductase by means of reducing the 4,5 double-bond. Dihydrotestosterone is produced by males in utero and is responsible for the formation of male gender-specific characteristics as well as contributing to other characteristics generally attributed to males, including facial and body hair growth, and deepening of the voice.
