神经生长因子(Nerve Growth Factor,NGF)是最早被发现、兼有神经元营养和促突触生长双重生物学功能的一种细胞调节因子.它对中枢和周围神经元的发育、分化、生长、再生和功能特性的表达均具有重要的调控作用,可促进受损神经再生、免受继发性损害、减少细胞死亡、支持神经元存活等功能.

背景资料
This gene is a member of the NGF-beta family and encodes a secreted protein which homodimerizes and is incorporated into a larger complex. This protein has nerve growth stimulating activity and the complex is involved in the regulation of growth and the differentiation of sympathetic and certain sensory neurons. Mutations in this gene have been associated with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, type 5 (HSAN5), and dysregulation of this gene's expression is associated with allergic rhinitis. HSAN5 patients manifest loss of pain perception and impaired temperature sensitivity, ulcers, and in some cases self-mutilation. The autonomic involvement is variable.
