The protein encoded by this gene is a brain fatty acid binding protein. Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are a family of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and other hydrophobic ligands. FABPs are thought to play roles in fatty acid uptake, transport, and metabolism. And is important in brain development.

Belongs to the calycin superfamily. Fatty-acid binding protein (FABP) family.
功能
FABP are thought to play a role in the intracellular transport of long chain fatty acids and their acyl-CoA esters. Binds oleic and palmitic acids but not palmitoyl CoA.
